Rock Creek, which runs along the base of Culp's Hill, is the subject of this stereograph, a view of quiet water and wooded banks. The creek lay near some of the fiercest fighting of July 2 and 3, 1863, when Union troops held the hill's slopes against Confederate assaults. Within a few years after the war, the ground drew visitors eager to see the battlefield. The card was issued by W.H. Tipton & Co., a Gettysburg firm that sold stereographs to those visitors. Each card held two nearly identical photographs, which a stereoscope merged into a single image with depth.
