Numbered 193 and titled simply "Head of Grand Canyon," this stereograph shows the upper end of the gorge, where the Colorado River begins its descent between the cliffs. It belongs to the U.S. topographical and geological survey of the Colorado River valley led by John Wesley Powell, whose expeditions in 1869 and 1871 to 1872 were among the first to map and photograph the canyon systematically. Stereo cards like this were made for parlor viewers, who used a stereoscope to see the cliffs in three dimensions and brought a remote landscape into middle-class homes. The date shown is an estimate, since the publisher is not named.
