The Grand Canyon is a gorge carved over millions of years by the Colorado River through layered rock in northern Arizona, and its exposed strata record roughly two billion years of geologic history. Landscapes like this drew artists, photographers and travelers from the late 1800s onward, when railroads brought visitors to the South Rim and the canyon's scale began to shape how Americans thought about the national wilderness. Pictures of the canyon often try to convey its depth and color, which change with the light across the day and the seasons. Designated a national park in 1919, the canyon remains one of the most widely photographed natural sites in the country.
