The Grand Canyon's North and South Rims sit about 200 miles apart, and a sunrise over the canyon shows what that distance hides: layered walls of red, orange and buff rock dropping thousands of feet to the Colorado River below. The canyon was carved over millions of years as the river cut downward through uplifted plateau, exposing rock strata that geologists read like a book of Earth's history. Early visitors often described the view as beyond words, and the canyon became a national park in 1919. Sunrise light tends to bring out the depth of the gorge, since shadows still fill the side canyons while the rim catches the first warm color.
