The Grand Canyon is a subject that photographers returned to again and again, but a panoramic view stretches the frame to take in the full sweep of the rim, the layered walls dropping away toward the Colorado River. Panoramic exposures of the canyon became popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when railroads brought tourists to the South Rim and photographers sought to convey the scale that single-frame pictures could not hold. Looking closely, the horizontal format makes the eye travel across the strata, where bands of rock mark hundreds of millions of years of exposed geologic time.
