Benito Mussolini, the Italian Fascist leader, is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits the Bain News Service produced and distributed to newspapers. The George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress holds many thousands of such negatives, mostly made in New York and Washington in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, which was not independently verified. Mussolini rose to power in Italy in 1922 and ruled as prime minister and dictator for two decades, so pictures of him circulated widely in the American press during that period.
