Amalfi, the town on Italy's Sorrento coast, is the subject named in this glass negative, which came out of the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency Bain ran from the early 1900s, sent images of places like this to newspapers and magazines, and its negatives were often captioned in haste. The record gives no date and flags the title as unverified, so the exact view and moment are uncertain. What survives is a useful glimpse of how a working agency documented Mediterranean towns for a press audience in that era.
