The name on this glass negative, Alice Pallottelli, comes from the Bain News Service's own notes and has not been independently confirmed, so the subject's identity remains an open question. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of a New York news photography agency that George Grantham Bain founded around the turn of the twentieth century. Its photographers covered theater, politics, sports, and street life, and their glass plates were sent out to newspapers for quick reproduction. Even when a subject is poorly documented, plates like this show how press photographers worked in that era.
