The only identifying detail here is the name Margaret Vale, and the record notes that the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its caption card, so the sitter's identity remains uncertain. The negative is a glass plate, a format that was standard for press and portrait work in the early twentieth century. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made up of negatives from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with news and feature photographs from about 1900 into the 1920s. Its large holdings, now at the Library of Congress, give a wide view of the people and events of that period.
