The name attached to this glass negative is Count Temistocle Bernardi, but the Bain News Service recorded it from data it never verified, so the identification should be read with caution. George Grantham Bain founded the agency in New York in 1901, and it supplied newspapers with news and feature pictures for roughly two decades, filing negatives by name and subject for quick reuse. Glass plates of this size were a standard tool of press photographers in that era, so the negative documents newspaper picture-making practice of the early twentieth century as much as any single documented event.
