The name on this glass negative, Dr. Eduard Benes, comes from caption cards the Bain News Service wrote for its pictures, and the record notes that the attribution is unverified. Beneš was a Czechoslovak diplomat who served as foreign minister and later as president, and the Bain agency, a New York business that supplied news photographs to newspapers, often photographed visiting statesmen and public figures during the early twentieth century. The record gives no date, so the sitting's exact occasion is unknown. Its small glass plate format was standard for news work of that era, and it is worth noticing as a record of how quickly such portraits moved from the studio to the press.
