The sitter is Sir Harold Bowden, a British industrialist who later chaired the Raleigh Cycle Company of Nottingham, the bicycle maker his father, Sir Frank Bowden, had built into a well-known name. The record gives no date, and the identification rests on caption cards from the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose glass negatives make up the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain's photographers worked from the early 1900s into the 1920s, often making portraits of visiting dignitaries and newsworthy people for newspaper clients, so the image offers a glimpse of how businessmen and public figures were presented in that period.
