The record identifies the sitter as Sir William Mitchell Ramsay, though that name comes from caption data the Bain News Service supplied and has not been verified. Ramsay was a Scottish scholar who spent decades surveying the roads and ruins of Asia Minor, now Turkey, and wrote widely on the travels of the apostle Paul and the early Christian communities there. He held the Lincoln Professorship of Classical Archaeology and Art at Oxford, which made him one of the leading British authorities in his field. The negative carries no date, so it is best read as a portrait of a scholar whose work was well known in the early twentieth century, when the Bain agency was producing news and portrait pictures for American newspapers.
