The names Wm. Christy, Miss Christy, Miss F. Hartford, and Paul Turner link this picture to a Society Circus held at Long Branch, New Jersey, a fashionable Atlantic seaside resort. The Bain News Service took these titles from its own caption cards, so they have not been independently verified. Amateur society circuses of this kind were staged by wealthy summer visitors, often for charity, and they drew press attention in the early 1900s. The glass negative is dated August 1909 and belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress.
