Hardly any American building is more recognizable than the house shown here, though in 1840 it was still usually called the President's House. Built of sandstone in the 1790s from a design by James Hoban, it was gutted by fire when British troops burned Washington in 1814 and then rebuilt. Etchings like this one, with their fine lines bitten into a metal plate, helped spread views of the capital to people who would never visit it. The name "White House" was informal for much of the 1800s and was not made official until 1901.
