Few places in early Hollywood were as ambitious on paper as this hillside in Beachwood Canyon, pictured as an open-air theater site around 1916. The image is a long, narrow gelatin silver panorama, nearly four feet wide, suited to the sweep of a bowl-shaped slope. Its survival owes to a copyright deposit submitted by George Loren Prince in June 1916, which is how the print reached the Library of Congress. Outdoor theatres modeled loosely on ancient Greek amphitheatres were a popular idea in Southern California in the 1910s, and this site reflects that enthusiasm.
