Rows of wooden derricks and squat storage tanks stretch across a flat, open landscape, marking an oilfield in the making rather than a town or waterfront. The panoramic format lets the viewer take in the full sweep of the field, with towers spaced at regular intervals and tanks clustered where the crude was gathered. Pictures like this were common in the early twentieth century, when oil booms drew rapid development to rural districts and photographers were hired to document the new industry. The board it hangs on is devoted to beaches and waterways, so the picture is worth a second look for the way it shows a working landscape that is not on the water at all.
