This glass negative is titled Brighton Beach, but the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service and has not been independently verified, so the exact location is uncertain. The name most often refers to the seaside resort in Brooklyn, New York, next to Coney Island, which drew crowds to its beaches and boardwalk in the early twentieth century. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency whose pictures covered city life, news and leisure, so this view likely reflects that world of summer outings by the water. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium of the period, and their fine detail is worth a close look.
