Few views capture a building in transit like this one. The panoramic print shows the Brighton Beach Hotel in Brooklyn being hauled away from the ocean front in 1888, with locomotives and railroad crews visible beside it. Brighton Beach was a fashionable seaside resort in the 1880s, served by rail lines that carried vacationers from the city, so the presence of engines in the scene points to the railroad's role in the operation. Moving a structure this large required heavy timber, jacks, and coordinated manpower, which makes the picture a record of late nineteenth-century engineering as much as of the resort itself.
