Recruits stand in ranks on open ground inside a fort while an instructor drills them, a scene set in the 1770s during the American Revolution. The picture is a color halftone made around 1910 from a painting by Arthurs dated 1905, printed for wide circulation at a time when such reproductions brought historical scenes into homes and schools. Drill of this kind turned farmers and tradesmen into soldiers who could load, fire, and maneuver together, a lesson the Continental Army learned in earnest under Baron von Steuben at Valley Forge in 1778.
