The Bain News Service, run by photographer George Grantham Bain in New York from the early 1900s, sent staff photographers out to cover the city's daily news, and this glass negative is one of its records of a school opening. The catalog gives no date, and the title comes from caption cards that the service's own data may not have verified, so the exact year and school remain uncertain. Still, the subject places it in an era when New York was expanding its public education system to serve a rapidly growing population, and the wet-plate-era glass format itself is worth noticing for how it captured the city's routine civic life.
