The record gives only a general title, "Opening of schools," with no place, date, or named people, so this glass negative is best understood through the collection it comes from. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds work from the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency that supplied newspapers and magazines with pictures of current events in the early twentieth century, roughly from the 1900s through the 1920s. Its staff photographed street scenes, public institutions, and civic occasions, and school openings were a common subject for local and national papers. Because the negative is a glass plate, its surface detail and tonal range are sharper than most later film, which makes the picture useful for examining clothing, architecture, and crowd behavior of the period.
