Lady Constance Stewart Richardson was a Scottish-born dancer and performer, and this glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the trove of images made by the Bain News Service in New York in the early twentieth century. Bain's studio sold pictures of theater people, socialites and newsworthy figures to newspapers, so portraits like this one were produced for quick publication and reached readers within days. The title comes from caption information the service recorded, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified, so the identification is best read as a working attribution. The glass plate format of the negative itself is worth noticing, since it reflects the fast, large-scale photographic practice of the period.
