Mary Stewart Cutting is the name given on the caption cards that accompanied this glass negative, though the Library of Congress notes that the identification has not been verified. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Bain's negatives were typically small glass plates, and many now survive as some of the earliest large-scale records of American public life, which makes each portrait a useful window onto the period's press photography.
