The sitter in this small glass negative is identified as Dr. Mary Crawford, but that name comes from caption cards the Bain News Service attached to its files and has not been independently confirmed. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, built by a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from the late 1890s until the 1930s. Glass negatives of this size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were a common working format for press photographers of the period, which makes the portrait a useful look at how newspaper pictures were made. The record gives no date, so the era is best judged from the format and the agency's active years.
