The Harvard Club of New York stands in the foreground of this c1920 print, with the Hotel Seymour rising behind it, placing the club among the dense hotels and office buildings of midtown Manhattan. Founded by Harvard alumni in the 1860s, the club gave graduates living in the city a place to dine, meet and keep up their university ties. The photograph was made by the American Studio and registered with the U.S. Copyright Office, so it also records how this streetscape looked shortly after the First World War. The hotel behind the clubhouse is worth a closer look for what it shows about the commercial building boom reshaping the district.
