The record points to a stage revue rather than the monument, even though the gallery files it with the Statue of Liberty images. The "Midnight Frolic" was the late-night rooftop show Florenz Ziegfeld staged atop the New Amsterdam theater on West 42nd Street in the 1910s, where audiences dined and watched elaborate numbers with views over the city. Revues of that era relied on lavish costumes and tableaux, and hand-applied color like this was a common way to give such photographs the glow of a live stage show.
