A sixth-plate daguerreotype shows Joseph Jenkins Roberts in a half-length, full-face pose, and a label taped to the back of its case identifies him as "President Roberts." The record describes this as a copy, with the original attributed to Augustus Washington, a Black American daguerreotypist who had worked in Hartford, Connecticut, before settling in Liberia. Roberts, born free in Virginia, emigrated to Liberia under the American Colonization Society and became the first president of the republic after it declared independence in 1847. The geometric backdrop and the diamond-patterned case give the piece a typical mid-century studio look.
