Titled simply "Lummi type," this photogravure reproduces a photoprint by Edward S. Curtis, dated in the record to about 1899. The title reflects Curtis's ethnographic method of presenting a representative figure rather than a named sitter. The image appeared as plate 320 in a supplement volume to *The North American Indian*, and the Lummi, a Coast Salish people of northwestern Washington, were among the groups Curtis photographed in the Pacific Northwest. The catalog notes that its caption data are unverified, so the sitter and exact setting should be read with caution.
