Carved acanthus leaves crown this Corinthian capital, an ornament meant to top one of the Capitol's columns and show how the building's classical details were finished. The print is a salted paper photograph, a process that used paper negatives and gave soft, warm tones. It comes from an album assembled by Benjamin Brown French, who, as commissioner of public buildings in Washington, oversaw much of the Capitol's expansion and the dome's construction in the late 1850s and 1860s. Pictures like this recorded the stonework during that work, when such details were close enough to study. The record dates it only to between 1859 and 1868, so the exact day it was taken is unknown.
