Before the conquest" carries a title that hints at a story, and the catalog tags point to its subjects: women's fashionable dress and servants, the two themes this card is indexed under. Dated to about 1897, it is a cabinet card, the stiff-backed format that became standard for studio portraits and staged genre scenes in the late 1800s. The copyright registration in the name of S.L. Stein shows that the image was protected as a published work, a step photographers took with popular studio pictures of the period. Its mix of costume and domestic detail offers a useful glimpse of 1890s dress and household life.
