This glass negative is titled simply "Maypoles," a name the Bain News Service recorded on its caption cards, though the record does not confirm the title or give a date or location. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early 20th century, so the image likely reflects the press photography of that era. The maypole dance, with dancers weaving colored ribbons around a tall pole, is a spring May Day custom with European roots that was widely performed by schools and community groups in the United States around that time. The pattern of ribbons braided down the pole is the detail worth noticing.
