The caption places this view at N.Y. Mills near Utica, in central New York's Mohawk Valley, though the Bain News Service recorded that title without verification, so the exact site deserves a second look. Utica and the villages around it grew up around textile and knitting mills that drew on the Mohawk River and its canals. The Bain service was a news photo agency active in the early twentieth century, and it documented industrial towns like this one for newspapers and magazines. The glass negative format points to a working image from the agency's files rather than a print made for display.
