This picture is a portrait of two performers, Sam Bilbrough and Lucille Imlay, identified in its record with a production of *The Rivals* at American University in Washington, D.C. Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy of manners, first staged in London in 1775, was a common choice for amateur and school theaters in the 1920s, when campus drama groups often revived classic comedies. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented local people and events for newspapers, and its glass negative is dated May 20, 1926.
