This glass negative records Willis Delaplain and Lucille Imlay in a production of *The Rivals*, the comedy of manners Richard Brinsley Sheridan wrote in 1775, staged at American University in Washington, D.C., around May 20, 1926. The sitters appear as performers in a student or campus theatrical, which was a common subject for the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city's social, institutional and public life in the early twentieth century. Its photographs were made on glass plates like this one, and the format preserves fine detail in faces and costume. Sheridan's play, with its witty rivalries and mistaken identities, remained a favorite for amateur and collegiate companies throughout the 1920s.
