The motto in the title, "For God and Country," was the American Legion's own phrase, and this poster puts it front and center as a statement of the organization's purpose. The Legion was founded in 1919 by veterans of the First World War and grew into one of the largest veterans' groups in the United States. By 1952, during the Korean War, it was using posters like this to promote civic service and national loyalty. The poster is a chromolithograph, a color printing method that made multicolor runs affordable for wide distribution.
