Newton Center in 1897 was the commercial heart of a residential village within the city of Newton, a Boston suburb that had become a city in 1873. Its growth followed the commuter railroad, which carried businessmen and clerks into Boston each morning and brought them home each evening, while large family houses rose on lots that had recently been farmland. The village was also home to Newton Theological Institution, a Baptist seminary founded in the early nineteenth century, which gave the center a scholarly character. Shops, churches, and a post office served a population that was rising quickly through the 1890s, and residents knew the village as a quiet, leafy place just beyond the city's noise.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Newton Center, Massachusetts, drawn in 1897. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
