Stone anchorages like this one hold the cables that carry a suspension footbridge, and the rough, deeply recessed joints of rusticated masonry give such a support a look of weight and permanence. The Boston Public Garden, laid out in the 1860s on land that had been a marsh, relied on structures like this to make its paths and bridges seem both practical and grand. Architects of the period often used rusticated stone to suggest strength while keeping the surface textured enough to catch light and shadow. Close attention to the stonework shows how the garden's engineering was meant to blend into its picturesque landscape.
