Guns taken from Serbian forces by Austrian troops give this glass negative its subject, though the title comes from unverified caption data and the record gives no date. The subject points to the First World War, when Austro-Hungarian troops, joined by German and Bulgarian forces, overran Serbia in late 1915 and seized large quantities of equipment. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sold images like this to newspapers hungry for war pictures, and its wartime prints often reached readers with little verified caption information. Its photographers commonly worked with glass negatives of this small size.
