The stern of the steamer Dacia, photographed at Galveston, sets this view apart from the harbor and deck scenes in the Bain News Service holdings. Galveston, on the Texas Gulf coast, was one of the busiest cotton and general cargo ports in the early twentieth century, and ships like Dacia moved through its wharves and channel regularly. The record gives no date, so the picture is best understood through its setting. Bain's staff photographed ships, waterfronts and news events in these years, and the stern, with its name and fittings, is a useful detail for identifying the vessel.
