Two senior Habsburg commanders appear together in this glass negative: Archduke Friedrich, nominal commander-in-chief of Austria-Hungary's armed forces, and Baron Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, chief of the General Staff. The title places them at headquarters, but the date is missing and the caption rests on unverified Bain News Service notes. During the First World War, Conrad handled much of the operational planning while the archduke served largely as the figurehead of the high command, so the pairing says something about how that command was organized.
