The only identifying details for this glass negative are its title, "Eliz. Brandeis," and the date, August 24, 1921, so the sitter's identity rests on a short inscription. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. studio that produced large numbers of portraits and news pictures in the early twentieth century, made the plate, and it reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Visitors should look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which the record attributes to natural deterioration of the original coatings.
