The only identifying detail for this glass negative is its title, "A. Salmaggi," taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service kept with its plates. The Library of Congress has not verified that name. George Grantham Bain founded the Bain News Service in New York around the turn of the twentieth century to sell news pictures to newspapers, so its negatives often record people in the news, public events and quickly made portraits. The plate's small size, 5 by 7 inches or smaller, suggests it was made for reproduction in print rather than for display. With no date in the record, the subject and year remain open.
