Alfonso XIII, who reigned as king of Spain from his birth in 1886 until 1931, is the subject of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, sent images like this one to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century, when portraits of European royalty were in steady demand. The record gives only the title supplied on the original negative or caption card, which the Library notes has not been independently verified, so the exact date and occasion are unknown. Alfonso's long reign, which ended with the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931, makes any portrait from these years a window onto a monarchy in transition.
