Ernestine Schumann-Heink, the contralto whose name is on this glass negative, was among the most celebrated singers of her era, performing with the Metropolitan Opera for many years and later touring widely in concert and on the lecture stage. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from about 1900 through the 1920s, produced this negative, and its caption cards are the source of the name recorded here, though the record itself flags that identification as unverified. Bain's files are valued because they document the faces and events of the period in a direct, working-press style. Collectors and researchers often look to them for portraits of performers and public figures.
