The record names the subject as Galli-Curci, which points to Amelita Galli-Curci, the Italian-born coloratura soprano who became one of the best-known singers of the 1920s after her American debut in Chicago and her Metropolitan Opera career beginning in 1921. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The catalog notes that the identification comes from caption data that has not been independently verified, so the sitter's identity and the date should be read with that in mind. The glass negative format shows how press photographs of performers were made before film became standard.
