Plate 51 of Henry Rowe Schoolcraft's *Historical and Statistical Information* presents Ojibwa "Meda" songs alongside the written marks used to record them. The Meda, or Midewiwin, was the Ojibwa Grand Medicine Society, whose members sang chants during healing and initiation rites. Army officer and artist Seth Eastman, who spent years in the upper Midwest, painted the original watercolor, which this chromolithograph reproduces in color. The plate is worth a close look for its pairing of song with symbolic notation, a record of how the chants were preserved outside the oral tradition.
