A woman sits with a banjo in this 1894 drypoint and aquatint by Mary Cassatt, a print that was hand-colored after printing, so each impression varies slightly in tone. Cassatt turned to printmaking in the 1890s, working in color with close attention to line and to the flat, patterned areas of Japanese woodblock prints. Her subjects were often everyday domestic scenes of women and children, and this one shows music making as a quiet private activity. The print is catalogued as Breeskin 156, in the fourth state, and it is signed in pencil by the artist.
