This picture, titled as a depiction of the Battle of Gettysburg, dates to 1957, nearly a century after the fighting in and around the Pennsylvania town from July 1 to 3, 1863. The battle drew the Union and Confederate armies into a three-day clash that ended with Lee's retreat and is widely regarded as a turning point of the Civil War. The later National Park Service materials on the battlefield, where this image appears, presented the fighting through its key sites, such as Little Round Top, the Peach Orchard, and Pickett's Charge, and images like this one helped visitors picture those places.
