The title "Young Dorsey" comes from information the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve, and the library has not verified who the sitter is. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century and produced a large body of portraits and views. Glass negatives of this size, 4 by 5 inches or smaller, were the standard working medium of the period, and this plate shows streaks and blemishes from the natural deterioration of its original coating. Herbert A. French gave it to the library in 1947.
